Las Fronteras de la Física (Entrevista a Juan Dominguez Montes)

English version below.

In English:

This is a fascinating interview with Juan Domínguez Montes, a Spanish telecommunications engineer who devotes himself energetically to both practical and theoretical science. It is perhaps in the area of physics where he has made his two most notable contributions.

As an inventor, businessman and indefatigable worker he has developed a 3D vision system which does not require the use of special glasses, and in his theoretical facet he has put forward a theory which could revolutionise theoretical physics. It is here that most of the questions in this interview focus.

Information theory appears to be applicable to anything. There are physical theories in which information is considered to be the very essence of reality, and information is being increasingly incorporated into the Laws of Nature. If Nature is information, living beings would be information processors and evolution the process through which these processors are optimised in respect of information that is constantly changing.

Information Theory has always been closely linked to non-fundamental physical disciplines such as thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. It is being applied to the study of black holes, but to better understand the informative nature of reality, it is necessary to introduce it into the same fundamental laws. This is what Juan Dominguez Montes has achieved, brilliantly. If we establish the uncertainty in the measurements in quantum mechanics and the uncertainty in the reference systems of general relativity as deriving from the existence of information which is not accessible to us, then both mysterious aspects of these two fundamental laws are subsumed under Information Theory, or at least the foundations are laid for a programme with that aim.

1) What made you introduce Information Theory to an area apparently so far removed from the field of Mathematics applied to communication as Physics Theory (26)?

Claude Shannon’s Mathematical Theory of Communication (1), set forth in his paper on what we know refer to as Information Theory, published in 1948, when quantum and relativist mechanics were definitively formulated. For chronological reasons, it was not possible for said theory to modulate that formulation, at least at the outset. It was an intellectual challenge to verify its incidence.

2) Had Information Theory previously been successfully applied to areas other than simple communication?

Yes. Mathematician Gregory Chaitin (2) had indeed put forward a definition of randomness for numerical series based on concepts described in Information Theory, and it was precisely around this concept in Physics that profound discussions between such prestigious physicists as Einstein (3) and Bohr (4) focused (5).

3) Why did you feel confident about embarking on an adventure of this kind?

I had been lucky enough to apply the Codification Theory (6) to a mathematical problem, which had hitherto gone unresolved, namely the counterfeit coin problem, so successfully that I managed to find a general solution to it (25). So it was an exciting prospect for me to try and apply it to Physics (26).

4) What aspects of quantum mechanics and relativity are affected by this new approach?

First of all, the concept of randomness in Quantum Physics. To deduce this I use such varied themes as: Bertrand Russell’s definition of determinism, (7) Claude Shannon’s information measure (1) and the concept of randomness for numerical series defined by Gregory Chaitin (2).
Surprisingly, the new concept of randomness I deduced implies the existence of non-interactive information which is transmitted at velocities exceeding that of light in a vacuum, information which could be considered a non-local hidden variable.
This explains how the randomness inherent to quantum mechanics is caused by the ignorance of the observer vis-à-vis this superluminal information.

5) When we talk about a non-local hidden variable aren’t we again introducing a mathematical entelechy the meaning of which is difficult to grasp in Physics?

Fortunately not. After calculating the velocity at which this information is transmitted, it proved to be the same as in the Lorentz Transformations (8) for transforming time, and also the same velocity as De Broglie (9-10) used to deduce particle wavelength.
However, De Broglie (9-10) considered that a wave which travelled faster than light in a vacuum, with a necessarily imaginary mass and which no-one has been able to observe, should be treated as a simple mathematical entity and its velocity became known as phase velocity.
In my work (26), this wave has a real physical significance. It is the carrier wave existing in all modulation processes, its movement precedes that of the modulating wave and, because it is monochromatic, in other words of a single frequency, it is unobservable using subluminal elements.

6) I understand that these waves hidden precisely because they are unobservable. Why cannot these waves be observed?

I use a cosmological argument in my work. Our observable universe has a finite volume due to the finite velocity of the electromagnetic waves with which it is observed and the finite time used by those waves in their journey towards us. According to Fourier’s Theorem, in a finite volume, the bandwidth of any signal is non-null and the larger the volume the smaller the bandwidth. The minimum value of bandwidth will correspond to the maximum volume or actual size of the universe and this minimum will be the bandwidth of any subluminal signal.
In contrast, the volume occupied by superluminal signals, in view of their higher velocity, will be higher, and as a result their bandwidth so small that its value may be null if its velocity tends towards infinity, as is the case of single-frequency or monochromatic waves.
The bandwidth of subluminal waves acts as a minimum unit of measurement below which the values are physically unobservable, as is the case of superluminal signals.

7) How does this new standpoint affect the basic relativist concepts such as the elimination of ether or the principle or relativity itself?

Before the Theory of Relativity, ether was considered to be the medium or support necessary for electromagnetic waves to produce their undulation and via which this undulation travelled. After the Theory of Relativity this concept disappeared from physics since it was considered mathematically unnecessary. However, in the opinion of some physicists this situation is not satisfactory because they see it as being conceptually as absurd as keeping the smile and ditching the Mona Lisa.

In my work, the physical support of any undulation or modulation is the carrier wave which, as we have said, is unobservable but not non-existent.

The carrier wave takes on the role of unobservable ether, like the ether suggested by Dirac (11-12).

The principle of relativity signifying the ignorance of the observer in respect of the velocity of the reference system leads to the same mathematical expression as the one obtained by randomness expressing the ignorance of the observer in respect of the superluminal wave or carrier wave.
The ignorance of the observer conceptually unites quantum randomness and the principle of relativity.

8) Does that mean that there are absolute reference points, as Newton or Ernst Mach supposed?

My work does not alter the basic formalism of relativity, nor does it destroy its basic concepts as a result, including the impossibility of a system of absolute reference.

9) How are your superluminal waves and the world of tachyons similar? And how do they differ?

Feinberg was the first to use the word tachyon to refer to imaginary particles that were faster than light because their existence was not prohibited by the theory of relativity. In fact, what was prohibited by said theory is the acceleration of ordinary matter to reach the speed of light or the slowing of imaginary tachyons to attain said velocity. Accordingly, just as there is ordinary matter which since its birth travels at subluminal velocity, there is no prohibition on the existence of a world full of tachyons which, since their birth, travel at superluminal velocities. In my work, this superluminal world permitted by the theory exists and is occupied by carrier waves, which are always superluminal but unobservable, and therefore any future attempt to find a tachyon via experimentation would be as useless now as it has always been.

10) So far we have been talking at conceptual level and it is well known that a work cannot be considered scientific unless it can be empirically falsified in the Popperian sense of the term. Does your work state something that is scientifically verifiable?

This work explains wave-corpuscle duality. The undulatory aspect is provided by the carrier wave and the corpuscular aspect by the modulating wave. Both aspects appear simultaneously in all modulation processes. The wave “or” particle disjunctive must be transformed, according to my work, into the permanent wave “and” particle duality, as has apparently been verified in Afshar’s experiment (14).

In my work, I also calculate the size or spatial extension of a particle as the place occupied by the modulating wave. For this calculation, I used the old and almost-forgotten Phase Harmony Theorem by De Broglie. The mathematical expression I obtain for this size and its maximum value may be falsified experimentally.

The size calculated is a function of the velocity and its maximum value corresponds to the approximate value speculated by Compton (24) and about which Rutherford (24) was so suspicious.

11) Bell’s Theorem (15) made it possible to design an experiment to decide between Einstein’s (3) idea of a real and local and Bohr’s concept. The most widely-accepted experiment that has been performed was the one conducted by Aspect (16-18), the findings of which are in line with the predictions of quantum mechanics. How do you interpret these findings and what does your work contribute to this new situation?

As the experiment shows, Bell’s inequality (15) is breached and therefore so is at least one of the two hypotheses put forward to prove it: Either “realism” or “locality” must be rejected. My work, since it accepts the existence of superluminal velocity clearly renounces locality and is therefore in accordance with the rejection obliged by experimental results, but it also explains this result because it considers that at the time of performing a measurement of a photon, in said experiment, the information contained in the carrier wave disappears instantly, and this alteration is transmitted to the entire volume occupied by this wave. In the case of Aspect’s experiment, this disappearance affects both photons used because, by both having a common cause they both have a common carrier, or, which amounts to the same thing, they have a single carrier.

12) If experimental data obliges us to accept the instant transmission of information between spatially separate objects, does this mean that it might be possible to act in the past?

Most specialists currently consider that this superluminal information cannot be used to transmit orders or useful information known as a signal, because it is uncontrollable, and it is therefore known as influence. Accordingly, the principle of subluminal velocity in a vacuum for signals, although not by influences, would remain in tact.
However, this superliminal information, although only at influence level, is able to act on the past and its existence paves the way for a variety of causal paradoxes which no specialist has yet dared to tackle.

This is not the case in my work, because I propose a correction of the classical mathematical formulation of this phenomenon, initiated by Tolman (19), with whom I agree, and subsequently completed by Richard G. Newton (20) on a curve closed in time and a Minkowski diagram, with whom I disagree.

My correction implies introducing a new algebraic term, apparently forgotten in all the studies, almost all of which were performed geometrically. While it does not alter the temporal order of events, it prevents action on the past by both superluminal signals and influences.

13) From your point of view, where does that leave time travel?

My correction that prevents superluminal signals and influences from travelling to the past affects only inertial systems.

However, time travel into the future would not be affected by my work, and I consider it possible.

My work does not discuss travel to the past with the help of the universes of Gödel (21) or Tipler (22) or via wormholes, although in principle I consider them to be highly improbable.

14) How does your new approach help the established relativist and quantum theories?

The opinion of Feynman, that new quantum physics can be “learned but not understood”, is well-known. His view is based mainly on Bohr’s interpretation (later known as the Copenhagen interpretation) which denies real attributes to quantum objects prior to performing a measurement.

My interpretation allows a mental representation of the quantum world; in other words, I generate a model able to represent the quantum and relativist world which enables us to understand it and which constitutes a solid basis on which to build a new set of questions and experiments which include the possibility of transmitting information at superluminal velocity, free of the problems inherent to the retro-causality derived from the possibility of travelling into the past.

15) Would you dare to design an experiment which could evidence the transmission of signals at velocities faster than that of light in a vacuum?

Although it sounds like a fantasy, I am trying to do just that. Avshalom, Elitzur and Lev Vaidman (23) have already solved the problem of seeing something in absolute darkness, in other words, without the help of even a single photon. My interpretation is that they are not using the magical quality of quantum mechanics but they are using the unobservable but nevertheless real carrier wave as the reading element.

Their experiment would need to be modified in order to make the carrier work at superluminal velocity, and it would be necessary to use slow group velocities such as those that accompany thermal neutrons like the ones used by Sam Werner or Helmut Rauch in their experiments.

16) If this kind of experiment worked, would this means of transmitting information be useful in interstellar communications?

In terms of velocity, it would be the best method so far conceived of.

17) If this is true, how do you resolve the Fermi Paradox, which says roughly that if it is logical that a large number of planets exist that are inhabited by intelligent beings, why have we not received any news of them?

The solution to this paradox is simple if you assume that extraterrestrial intelligent forms use superluminal waves of the kind described in my work for their communications, because our ignorance in regard to these extraterrestrial signals may be due more to our own incapacity to generate and detect them than to their not existing.

18) I would also like to know your opinion on many other subjects, such as the size of the universe, how you imagine superluminal journeys, your interpretation of Einstein’s assertion that God does not play dice, black holes, etc.

….. and on the meaning of time and, of course, on my systems for capturing and reproducing stereoscopic images…. I would be happy to meet again whenever and wherever you like to discuss all of these issues over a drink.
